Cabaret Calgary Theatre reviews
More than I expected
If given a chance to watch the Windwood production of Cabaret, it's the one you do not want to miss. I have read some reviews of other productions and their comments differ from the Windwood production version. I assure you that all of the songs are not only in the show, but directed and performed by several extremely talented up-and-coming cast members (as well as a few extremely experienced veterans that were amazing).
I have seen shows on Broadway and dozens of national touring shows through Broadway Across America that have been great, but few have impressed me with the amount of talent I witnessed in this production of Cabaret. You will not find a bad voice in this cast. Every number is nailed and every role is acted so convincingly that you walk out of the theater doors expecting to step onto a Berlin Germany street outside of the Kit Kat Club. If you are familiar with the '98 Broadway Revival recording starring Alan Cumming, you will not be disappointed in Zac Mordechai's Emcee, Oakley Boycott's Sally Bowles, or any other cast member.
The stage design, dancing/choreography, and cabaret band was well wonderful. This is one to see if you're a Broadway fan. My only negative comment about the show was the missing souvenir stand. There were no T-shirts, CD's, hats, lapel pins, or photo-filled program. A playbill and wonderful memories are all you get to take home.
As a side note: This is not a family show to take Barney and Dora the Explorer children to. It realistically portrays a cabaret in Berlin Germany in an early 1930's pre-World War II. There is no nudity (or even close) like some reviews suggest, but for sexually suggestive themes caution should be used.
